Justice or Just-Us

This body of work is about a particular vein of jagged justice as applied to people of African ancestry in the United States. It is concurrently a universal call for solidarity with all peoples labouring under injustices: from Darfur to Fruitvale Station, from Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo Bay to Hands Up, don’t shoot and I can’t breathe. These paintings are about the named and unnamed fingers on the triggers of injustice. They are for Oscar Grant, Jonathan Ferrell, Trayvon Martin, Jordan Davis, Michael Brown, Eric Garner, Tamir Rice(12) and all who walk, have walked and will walk in their told and untold realities of police brutality. They are for Tanisha Anderson, and Melissa Alexander, Sandra Bland, Yvette Smith, Aiyana Stanley-Jones (7), Kathryn Johnston (92), Korryn Gaines and all who walk, have walked and will walk in their told and untold stories of jagged justice.
